employed by the Copper Coal Company about
six months before he entered the U.S. Navy in
September 1943.
"He took his boot training at Great Lakes and
in May 1944 went overseas. He was aboard the
destroyer U.S.S. Bright when it was hit by a
Japanese suicide plane during the Okinawa
campaign.
"The destroyer burst into flames and crashed.
As it hit the water its bombs exploded blowing
in a sterm from below the waterline to the main
deck. December 1945 he was discharged.
"May 10, 1947 he married Hattie England.
She was born April 8, 1929 in Hemphill the
daughter of Luther and Annie Crabtree En—
gland.
"Her father was a coalminer at U.S. Steel and
Cannelton Coal. Her mother died when she was
six.
"She was a 1946 graduate of Welch High
School. Following graduation she was an em-
ployee of Sam Selins and remains an employee
in that office.
"1950 he graduated from the McLain Business
College, Bluefield. He was employed by
Ashworth Motors and then Picklesimmers
Desota Garage in Welch. He then went to work
for Hall Chevrolet Sales and has remained there.
"Daughter Sylvia was born in Welch. She
married EE. Evans who is deceased She resides
in Bramwell.

"Gracie Jane Rowe, 73, of Princeton, WV, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2019 in the Mercer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Princeton, WV."Gracie was born in Jolo, WV, May 6, 1945 a daughter of the late Ruben and Betsy Waldron Rowe. She was a homemaker, loved her coffee and enjoyed coloring and puzzle books. Gracie loved going to church and loved children. Gracie was the last surviving member of her original family.
"In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two sister, Mae Mullins and Eva Rowe; and four brothers, Crockett, George, Johnny and Roosevelt Rowe.
"Survivors include one son, Jerry Glen Rowe and wife Amber of Princeton, WV; three grandson, Tucker, Conner, and Logan Rowe all of Princeton, WV; and a host of nieces and nephews.
"Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at 12 o’clock with Reverend Jimmy Kelly officiating at the Chapel of Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger, WV. Burial will follow in the Hatfield Cemetery at Buckeye near Jolo, WV. Serving as pallbearers will be family and friends.
