"Glenn Alan Keys, 63, passed away on Monday, May 18, 2009, at his home in Radford, Va. He was born in Montgomery, W.Va., the son of Glenn Snavely and Estelle Kessler Keys. He was a control systems engineer at GE for eight years and RAAP for over 32 years. He was a member of the Radford Jaycees where he held many offices. He was a Graduate of West Virginia Institute of Technology and served in the United States Army Reserves. He was preceded in death by a son, Kevin Christopher Keys; and a sister, Brenda Keys Franchoise. Survivors include his wife, Charlene C. Keys; two sons, Christopher Keys, of Radford, and Kerry Keys, of Fort Sill, Okla.; and a brother, Stacy Keys, of Princeton, W.Va. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, May 22, 2009, at the Central United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tammy Wright and the Rev. Ric Wright officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunrise Burial Park in Radford.∼Glenn Alan Keys, 63, of 1203 Tyler Avenue, Radford, VA, passed away Monday, May 18, 2009, at his home, on his beloved couch, with his "Precious Princess" wife by his side. He persevered through six years of kidney cancer, being on some form of chemotherapy most all the time. Drs. Gollob and Febbo of Duke University Medical Center were super in their continual research for developing newer and better drugs to treat this cancer. Glenn never balked at trying any new treatment, including going through a year-long tough clinical trial in 2006. His main goal was to help the doctors learn what the best treatment would be for future kidney cancer patients. In turn, he benefited as well."He was born in Montgomery, WV, on June 26, 1945, the middle child of Glenn Snavely Keys (1914-1995) and Estelle Lura Kessler-Keys (Deceased), both deceased.
"The family moved to Kopperston, WV, a modern model mining community, unlike any other kind, in 1951. He attended Kopperston Grade School and graduated from Oceana High School in 1963, where he was involved in many organizations and graduated 5th in his class. It was during his senior year that he discovered the "Love of His Life," Charlene Centers, two years younger. They were members of the same church, Kopperston Presbyterian Church, in the Senior Youth Group, and volunteered for many projects to help the needy. Their dads worked for the same coal mine company, and the two families lived only two blocks apart.
"Glenn returned to Montgomery, WV, to attend West Virginia Institute of Technology, where he received his bachelor of science degree, Magum Cum Laude, in mechanical engineering in May 1967. He was inducted into Alpha Eta, the engineering honor society, and was a member of the school tennis team.
"Prior to his senior year at West Virginia Tech, Glenn and Charlene were married at the Kopperston Presbyterian Church on June 4, 1966, 43 years ago today.
"Glenn began his career as an engineer with Hercules, Inc., in Cumberland, MD, and was transferred nine months later to the Radford Army Ammunition Plant in Radford, VA, in March 1969, at the height of the Vietnam war. He was instrumental in the design and building of their first TNT plant. With a lot of self study of computer systems, as well as working toward a master's degree in computer science at Virginia Tech, Glenn was one of the first Control Systems engineers at the plant. He was very instrumental in implementing the system to produce nitroglycerine remotely, in order to keep employees safe. Safety was his number one priority. He completed half of his master's degree, quitting work on it only because his precious first son, Kevin, died from a malignant brain tumor, an Ependemoma. Hercules sold their part of the plant to Alliant Techsystems in 1994, and Glenn remained at the plant until May 1999 a period of 32 years. In September 1999, he began working for General Electric in Salem, VA, having been hired over the age of 50. He implemented procedures that are still in use. Young people working there praise him for the work he did. He was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma in March 2003. He continued working for GE until November 2006, when he was finishing up the clinical trial of a newly researched chemotherapy for kidney cancer. Glenn's college degree may have been in mechanical engineering, but he also did work as a chemical engineer at RAAP, and as an electrical engineer at both plants.
"As a member of the Radford Jaycees, Glenn held many offices and participated in many state functions. He truly loved the work of the Jaycees, especially that of taking needy children shopping at Christmas. He belonged to Toastmaster's International, where he excelled in giving speeches about his first-born son, Kevin. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, where he served as treasurer and on the usher's team. He and Charlene were members of the first Pair's and Spares Sunday School class and served as greeters many times.
"Glen helped coach little league baseball, soccer, and basketball for the City of Radford. He was a very active member of the Radford High School Athletic Booster's, working tirelessly in the concession stands and being a spotter for the football announcer. He was also a member of the Radford High School Band Booster's and helped the school band a great deal. He was a member of the United States Army Reserves from 1970 through 1975, and served his active duty at Ft. Knox, KY.
"In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first-born son, Kevin Christopher Keys (Deceased); and a sister, Brenda Lynn Keys-Franciose (1941-1991).
"Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Charlene Mae Centers-Keys (B. 1947) whom he married on June 4, 1966 in Kopperston, Wyoming County, WV (per WV Marriage License Register, Wyoming County, WV, 1966, Page 416, Application Date: May 28, 1966); two sons, Christopher Alan Keys, of Radford, and Kerry Alan Keys, of Ft. Sill, Okla.; a brother, Stacy Keys and wife, Ramona, and her nephew, Ayden, age two, of Princeton, W.Va.; a very special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Darlene and Roger Lester and sons, Thomas and Eric, Eric's wife, Ami, and their son, Jackson Bret Lester, all of Princeton, W.Va.; special friends, Sam and Norma Moore; and his special buddy engineers with whom he worked at the Radford Arsenal, Kenny Mundy, Denny Carlyle, Roger Flora, Rod Wilson, Pete Wetzel, and Richard LaBrie; special helper employees at GE, Bill Grefe and Nambie; tennis-playing and church buddy, Dave Harless; and a very special "Ducky."
"The family would like to send a very special thanks to Pastor Tammy for her constant compassion, guidance, and love and to the Rev. Ric for his special love and direct line to God. A very special "Thank You" goes out to Dr. Tina Smucz (Glenn's "Angel") for her wonderful Palliative medical care along with the rest of the Carilion Clinic Hospice Team. They are all truly "Angels of Mercy." Also, special "Thanks" to Dr. William Baker, Nephrologist, and his office staff, to the nurses, CNA's, Physical Therapist Sean, the special PA, Jessica, on floor nine of Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., and to Dr. Phillip Febbo of the Duke University Oncology/ Hematology Clinic.
"The family received friends from 6 until 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2009, at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. on Friday, May 22, 2009, at the Central United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tammy Wright and the Rev. Ric Wright officiating. Special music included John Denver's song, "Annie's Song," which was Glenn and Charlene's "song" and played on guitar and sung by Linda Bernic, and Glenn's favorite hymn, "How Great Thou Art," sung by the Rev. Ric Wright. The family requests that contributions be made to the Central United Methodist Church Building Fund, Eighth and Wadsworth Streets, Radford, Va. 24141 or to Carilion Clinic Hospice, 707 Randolph Street, Radford, Va. 24141."

"Charlene Centers Keys, of Radford, died June 24, 2022 at Lewis-Gale Montgomery Hospital in Blacksburg. Charlene was born September 8, 1947 in Beckley, W.Va. to William Taylor Centers and Frances Irene Smalley Centers. Charlene was raised along with her twin sister, Darlene, and six other siblings in Kopperston, W.Va. She graduated with honors from Oceana High School in Oceana, W.Va. She and Darlene worked for the FBI for a year and she married her high school sweetheart, Glen Keys on June 4, 1966. She worked at WV Tech. while Glenn finished his degree in engineering. They lived a short time in Frostburg, Md. and then settled in Radford, Va. Charlene worked as Ex. Secretary for State Farm Ins. Co. while attending Radford University. She graduated with honors from Radford University with a degree in insurance and economics. She owned her own State Farm franchise in Radford for several years. Charlene and Glen were active in the Radford JC's, their children's school activities, football, basketball, baseball, and band organizations. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Radford."Charlene was preceded in death by her husband and the love of her life, Glen Keys, son Kevin Christopher Keys, sisters JoAnn Bane and Joyce French, and brother, Eugene Centers.
