"On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Donald G. Cook of Pineville passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of his family.Born on August 25, 1951, in Pineville, West Virginia, Don was the son of the late Jay C. Cook Jr. and Gusta M. Adams Cook of Wyoming, WV. Throughout his life, Don was known as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, respected leader, faithful Christian, and a man whose character and generosity touched countless lives.
Above all else, Don's greatest love was his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Tammy; his daughter, Karrie Mutterback; his son, Jason Cook (Tonya); his cherished grandchildren, Hailee Jones (Ethan), Deegan Mutterback, Maleah Mutterback, and Kinlee Cook; his twin brother, Ronald Cook (Kathy); and many beloved nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He also leaves behind his faithful companion and beloved dog, Wylie, who rarely left his side.
Don was a member of Cooper Memorial Baptist Church, where his faith was an important part of his life. He lived by the values of kindness, humility, service, and love for others, quietly demonstrating those principles through his actions every day.
Don found his greatest joy in spending time with those he loved. Whether gathered around a campfire, sharing stories after a day in the woods, traveling the country, or making memories with his
children and grandchildren, family was always at the center of his life. Some of his happiest moments were spent hunting, fishing, camping, tubing, and exploring the outdoors with those closest to him. He taught his children and grandchildren not only how to enjoy nature but also how to appreciate its beauty, respect its traditions, and value the time spent together.A lifelong outdoorsman, Don's passion for hunting, fishing, wildlife, conservation, and especially archery and bow hunting shaped much of his life. He was an accomplished bowhunter and a
dedicated advocate for the sport of archery. Don took great pride in sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with others, inspiring his son Jason and many young men throughout the community to
take up archery and bow hunting. Through his mentorship, he helped instill a respect for the outdoors, sportsmanship, and conservation that continues through those he influenced today. He and Tammy shared a love of travel and adventure, visiting national parks across the country and creating treasured memories while exploring some of America's most beautiful landscapes. Whether on a mountain trail, in a deer stand, beside a river, or around a campfire under the stars, Don felt most at home in nature.Don's influence extended far beyond his family. He was a pillar of the Pineville community and a mentor to countless young people. Through years of coaching Tee Ball and Little League, he helped shape the lives of many young athletes, teaching lessons that reached beyond the playing field. His encouragement, leadership, and example inspired generations of young men to work hard, treat others with respect, and live with integrity. Many who crossed his path looked to Don not only as a coach but as a role model, teacher, and friend.
His commitment to the outdoors and his community was reflected in his leadership roles as President of the Baileysville Sportsman Club, President of the Big Branch Hunt Club, and Lead Regional Representative and Director of the West Virginia Bowhunters Association. Through these organizations, he worked tirelessly to promote conservation, preserve outdoor traditions, advance the sport of archery, and strengthen the bonds of fellowship among sportsmen throughout the region.
After graduating from Pineville High School in 1969, Don began a distinguished career in the coal mining industry. At just 23 years old, he became a section foreman for Island Creek Coal Company and went on to serve in numerous leadership positions, including Safety Director, Shift Foreman, Strip Mine Foreman, and Impoundment Supervisor.
For the last 26 years of his professional life, Don served as founder and president of Triangle Safety Services, a company that continues to operate today and stands as a testament to his vision,
expertise, and dedication to mine safety. He was also the co-founder and president of Southern Pocahontas Mine Rescue Service. Alongside his dear friend and business partner, Donnie Coleman, Don helped build Southern Pocahontas Mine Rescue into a respected organization dedicated to protecting miners and advancing mine safety throughout the region. Together, they established mine rescue stations throughout West Virginia and Virginia, creating a lasting legacy of service and preparedness. Don's leadership and commitment to mine safety earned him the respect of miners and industry professionals across the region. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, he was inducted into the Mine Rescue Hall of Fame.While Don was proud of his many professional accomplishments, those who knew him best will remember his warm smile, kindness, humility, strong work ethic, sense of humor, unwavering faith,
and devotion to family and friends. His legacy is measured not only by the organizations he led or the honors he received, but by the countless lives he influenced through mentorship, friendship,
community service, and his example as a husband, father, grandfather, outdoorsman, and Christian.Don's memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him and in every mountain trail, hunting camp, archery range, fishing hole, and campfire gathering where stories of his life will continue to be shared. His was a life well lived—a life defined by faith, love of family, service to others, and a deep appreciation for God's creation.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at 11:00 am in the Evans-Calfee Funeral Chapel, Pineville WV. Internment at Cooper Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery, Skin Fork Road, Brenton, WV. Following the internment, the Cook Family invites you to join them for a time of fellowship and refreshments at Cooper Memorial Baptist Church.
