"OCEANA-James "Otis" Cook, gently passed away, Monday, May 23, 2005 at home in the arms of his daughter, with his wife at his side, following a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Born October 10, 1920, at Itmann, raised at Keyrock, he was the eldest son of the late John Blake and Hattie Stewart Cook.
"He was a 1939 graduate of Pineville High School, being inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 1988, past member of the Oceana Rotary Club and served on the Board of Directors at The Bank of Oceana.
"Mr. Cook's first job was on a prop job, timbering at Keyrock, "It was 10 hours a day and 30 cents an hour." he recalled. He worked the Mullens Dollar Store as a stock boy and at Kroger's Grocery Store in Mullens, later working at Koppers Store in the produce department until being promoted to head butcher. He also worked at Koppers Tipple. Mr. Cook spent the last 62 years of his life in Oceana with 55 years selling new and used cars, having retired November 6, 2004, closing his business, Otis Cook Motor Sales, Inc.
"Mr. Cook was a quick-witted quiet gentleman who loved his family, children, selling cars, helping others and a dedicated member and deacon of Toneda Missiionary Baptist Church at Toney Fork. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Angela Dawn Blackburn, son-in-law, Joe Otis Blackburn and a sister, Joyce Goddard. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years, Lucille Godard Cook of Oceana; a son, Donnie Lee Cook and his wife, Patricia of Draper, VA.; a daughter, Peggy Blackburn of Oceana; two brothers, Dick Cook and his wife, Mildred of Beckley and Barbe cook and his wife, Maxine of Wilmington, NC.; two sisters, Clara Dee Cook and her husband, Charles W. "Buddy" of Pineville; and Patricia Workman and her husband, Pat of Summersville; six grandchildren, James "Jim" Lee Cook and his wife, Dawn of Dyess AFB, TX., Rodney Allen Cook and his wife, Lisa of Sutton, Lori Shane Cook Hawk and her husband, Darrin of Greenville, SC., Don Don Cook of Draper, VA., Toni Blackburn Stewart and her husband, Ralph of Kopperston and Vernon Barbe Blackburn of Nashville, TN.; eight great-grandchildren, Callie Beth Cook of Oceana, Chris and Jamie Cook of Dyess, AFB, TX., Garrett and Payton Hawk of Greenvile, SC., Nathan Cook of Cyclone; Marina Renee and Cody Lee Stewart of Kopperston; two step grandchildren, Melissa Stump of Draper, VA., and Cortney Stewart of Sutton.
