"Mrs. Katie B. Greenwood-Griffin age 75 and a life long resident of Hemphill, WV, who passed away on Friday, December 11, 2020 at Welch Community Hospital. She was born May 26, 1945 in Fairmont, WV and the daughter of the late James Greenwood Sr. and Minister Mattie Austin Greenwood Manns. After completing her High School education, she began working as a cook at several local restaurants. Also, she was a Dietary Supervisor at the (former) Doctors’ Memorial Hospital in Welch, WV, and retired from McDowell Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Gary, WV. In earlier years, she was a member of the (former) Emmanuel Tabernacle Church in Hemphill and later joined Royal Kingdom in Capels, WV."In addition to her parents and step father, Henry Manns, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Griffin; two brothers, Richard and James (Ruth) Greenwood Jr., and her sisters: Virginia M. Hairston, Laura M. (Paul) Booker and several close nephews and nieces.

"Ms. Frenchie Paulette Culbertson of Kimball, West Virginia; formerly of Hemphill, West Virginia, passed away early on Monday, September 22, 2025 in Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Virginia following a brief illness."She was born in Welch, West Virginia, on the 23rd day of July, 1963 and the daughter of Sylvester "Jabo" Culbertson and Katie Greenwood Culbertson.
"After completing her high school education at Mount View High School in Welch, she began working at Tug River Clinic in Gary, West Virginia, was employed by Mountain Heart Daycare in Princeton, West Virginia and last employed at Little General (formerly Kwik Serve) Deli in Welch, as she was an exceptionally good cook. While growing up in Hemphill, she attended the former, Emmanuel Tabernacle Church. She was a member of Royal Kingdom Ministries in Capels, West Virginia, where she had served as a member of the choir.
"Frenchie's most favorite pastimes were spent, watching the cooking shows and calming effects coloring. She was a very talented dancer and a "die hard" Steelers' fan.
"She was preceded in death by her mother, Katie and stepfather, Robert Griffin, her father, Sylvester; a granddaughter, Ny'asia and a brother, Donald Baylor.
"Frenchie leaves cherished memories of her life to her daughter, Adrianne Culbertson of Welch and her son, Marquis Culbertson of Berwind, West Virginia and the" four delights in her life," her granddaughters: Myniyah, Malaysia "Lola," Maleigha, Khalani and special granddaughter, Aireonna Anderson; her only sister, Kimberly Culbertson of Hemphill and her aunts: Vanessa Greenwood, Edith Culbertson and Margaret Culbertson; her very dear nephews, nieces and cousins; many neighbors and friends and Kimberly Lee of Princeton, West Virginia, whom she regarded as her daughter.

"Michael Leon Ward Sr., of Buefield, West Virginia; formerly of Landgraff and Kimball, West Virginia, departed this life on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 in Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, West Virginia."Michael was born on the 3rd day of April, 1957 in Welch, West Virginia and raised by his aunt, Beatrice and uncle, Grover Reese. He was a member of Upland Baptist Church. He was a 1976 graduate of Northfork High School and a member of the track team, where he had received several awards. Michael was the last President of the Elkhorn Valley Little League.
"Michael was a former employee at Welch Daily News, he had worked as a coal miner for US Steel in Gary, West Virginia; was a McDowell County Correctional Officer, and employed by the Holiday Inn of Bluefield. Also, he had worked at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant in Radford, Virginia. For the past 12 years, he was employed by the Board of Education in Welch, as a Bus Driver for the Schools in McDowell County.
"Michael was the Secretary of the Black Diamond Board and had served with the following teams: Basketball for 29 years, Baseball 28 years and Softball for 27 years. Also, he had held 22 years of service on the Mercer County Volley Ball Board. His most favorite saying, "I CALL IT, LIKE I SEE IT."
"Michael was preceded in death by one daughter, Kiesha M. Ivy Ward; his aunt, Beatrice and uncle, Grover Reese; his father, Leon Crawley Sr., and one brother, Terrance Crawley; sister-in-law, Linda Ivy and brother-in-law, Jerrod Ivy.

Silver devoted her life to raising her children and her two precious granddaughters. She played a vital role in their lives to ensure theri future success and happiness.
