"BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. Cecil Burkes, age 97, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, May 14, 2011, at
his residence. Mr. Burkes was born March 10, 1914, in Hurley, Va., the son of the late Taylor and Paulina Burkes. He
had lived the last 35 years in the Abingdon, Va. and Blountville area. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church of
Blountville. Mr. Burkes started in the railroad business with N & W Railroad. He then spent most of his time in the
coal industry in different capacities in Virginia, West Virginia and Ohio, with most of the time in Logan, W.Va. before
retiring. He was a proud member of the United Mine Workers of America. In addition to his parents, Mr. Burkes is
preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Cora Lockhart Burkes; daughter, Wilma Burkes Paul and three grandchildren, Carol
Burkes, Lisa Burkes Vanmeter and Steven Ralph Mullins. Survivors include daughters, Bonnie Burkes Mullins, Port St. Lucie, Fla.
and Margaret Mangus and husband, Robert, of Blountville, a son, Lacy Burkes and wife, Bonnie, Blountville; sister, Corby
McClanahan, Cedar Bluff, Va.; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services
for Mr. Burkes will be Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at 1 p.m. in the Akard Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eddie Zimmerman
officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery, Abingdon. Visitation with the family will be Monday May 16, 2011, from 6 to 8
p.m. at Akard Funeral Home. The family wishes to extend special thanks to Judy for her loving care of our father and grandfather.
