He was a retired coal miner and a member of the Iaeger Volunteer Fire Department. He was a school teacher for the McDowell County Board of Education and taught mining maintenance. Raymond was a musician and an author of songs, poetry, and short stories.
" Raymond was the last surviving member of his original family, in addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Yvonne Church; a daughter-in-law, Belvia Church; four sisters, Liddy Reed, Irene Green, Barbara Taylor and Goldie Evans; six brothers, JR, Ervin, Roscoe, Frank, Bruce, and George Church.
