"William Claude Banner Jr, passed away Monday, October 1, 2018 at his residence. Born April 24, 1925 in Banner Elk, N.C. he was the son of the late William Claude Banner Sr and Myrtle Burleson Banner.He was a 1943 graduate of Gary High School, a 1947 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and a member of the Highty Tighties. After a thirty eight year career with U.S. Steel Mining Company in Gary, WV, he retired to civic activities. He was a member and past President of the Welch Lions Club; a member of the Welch United Methodist Church; and served on various boards including the City of Welch Water and Sanitary Boards, McDowell County EDA, CIAD, National Coal Heritage Authority, and Welch Gas Co-op. He enjoyed Virginia Tech football, Railroads, Reading, and attending meetings. He was dependable, reliable, handy, and compassionate. He made many friends during his life and quietly served others.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Reba, and cousin T.L. Ray.Survivors include, one daughter, Claudia; several cousins, and nieces and nephews by marriage. Special thanks to caregiver Gerald Diggs.Friends may call Thursday, October 4, 2018 from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. at the Fanning Funeral Home Chapel in Welch WV.A private Funeral Service will be held at a later time, with the Reverend Olen Butcher-Winfree.Robert Bielawski, Thomas Hale, Thomas Ray, Fred Swartzendruber, Darrell Jones and Tony Allen will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include, Jim Ingole, George Fisher, Andrew Satmary, and Welch Lions Club Members...."
