Betty Jo Hypes

1. Tankersley Funeral Home, Mullens, WV; Posted Obit.
"Betty Jo Hypes, of Mullens, passed away on Saturday, September 29, 2018 from pancreatic cancer.

"Born in Mullens, WV, she was the daughter of Buford E. Hypes, Sr. and Annie Taylor Hypes.

"Betty Jo graduated from Mullens High School in 1952 and Concord College in 1956. She taught in the English Department at West Virginia University for 42 years. Betty Jo loved WVU and was a true Mountaineer. Betty Jo was an avid reader and taught many students how to express themselves through writing and using grammar correctly. Students loved Ms. Hypes because of her storytelling. Betty Jo made her living talking. She never met a stranger.

"She loved music, musicals, plays, and poetry. In her leisure she played the piano and sang. She traveled to many foreign countries and across the United States. Above all she loved her family and friends, and especially her sister Alice.

"In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters Maude Canterbury (Henry) and Nelva Webster (Sam); her brother Buford E. "Bud" Hypes.

"Betty Jo is survived by her sister Alice Hypes, her brother Pete Hypes (Rachel); nieces, Trudy Blackwell (Bucky), Tammy McKinney (Clifford), Elizabeth Hypes and Bertie Arellanos; nephews, Dr. Samuel E. Webster, Andrew Canterbury, Petie Hypes, and Derrick Hypes; special great nieces and nephews, Audra Blackwell (Matthew Martin), Mark Blackwell, Clint Houck, Amber Ribner (Andrew) and Blaine McKinney.

"Services will be 12 Noon, Friday, October 5, 2018 at the Highland Avenue Baptist Church, Mullens with Rev. Lewis Arnold officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley...."

"By now you are probably wondering why I am posting about the two co-ed murders at WVU in 1970. Because in 1970, Wyoming County native and Mullens resident Betty Jo Hypes was on the WVU faculty teaching English. In April of 1970, Ms. Hypes was walking down the street in Morgantown when she noticed she was being followed by a suspicious man in an old white car. His description fitted the one given by witnesses who saw the two missing girls enter such a car while hitchiking back to their dorm. Ms. Hypes attempted to evade her stalker. She walked down a one way street, knowing that the suspicious man could not follow her. When she came to a store, she entered it and watched to see if the stalker was outside, knowing where she was hiding. Ms. Hypes described the man as scruffy and "scary." She was interviewed for the book I am reading and just posted about. I don't think Ms. Hypes would have hitchiked around Morgantown in 1970, but many students did and two lost their lives for getting into a car with the wrong man."

Additional Information Posted:
"Irma Lea Nunn-Webb, 99 years of age, passed away peacefully at her home in Bluefield, VA on August 20, 2020. Irma was a modern day renaissance woman. After completing a12 year high school program in 10 years, she started her career as storekeeper for Pocahontas Fuel Company. She subsequently became a qualified nurse but decided nursing was not her life’s calling. Instead, World War II was going on and she joined the Navy where she achieved a First Class Storekeeper Rank. She was the leading Class Petty Officer in her division. After marrying Nathan Webb in 1948, Irma began a new career as a mother and business owner when they started a television sales and repair shop.

'Irma then pursued a teaching degree in Elementary Education at Bluefield State College. Her plan was to write children’s literature and books, but after graduating in 1965, she accepted a teaching position at Pocahontas Elementary School in VA. As they say, “the rest is history”. Irma was bitten by the teaching bug. She taught for 6 years before becoming a principal at Falls Church and subsequently a supervising principal. Irma earned her Masters Degree from East Tennessee State University. She published many articles and wrote several educational curricula and was very proud to have run a GED program for a number of years.

"Irma was born during the Great Depression on January 2, 1921 in Switchback, McDowell County, WV to a coalminer, Wilson Albert Nunn (1889-1968) and Alice Roxanne Shaw-Nunn (1901-1993). She is predeceased by four siblings, Joseph Nunn (Deceased), Woodrow W. Nunn (1924-2012), Minnie Nunn-Poff (Deceased), and Margie Nunn-Pruett (Deceased).

"Irma is survived by her daughter, Sara Webb-O’Neal of Milledgeville, GA; sons, Steve Webb & wife Sukyo Webb of Warrenton VA, Marvin Webb & wife Vdernelle Webb of Milledgeville, GA; and Timothy Webb of KY; four grandchildren, Alex Webb of WV, Jo Ann O'Connor & husband Ryan O’Connor of El Paso TX, Calvin Webb of Bluefield, VA and Alexandria Webb; great grandchildren, Travis Webb & wife Sarah Webb, Matthew Webb, Meredith Hill, Payton Hill, Colin O’Connor and Claire O’Connor; and two great-great grand children, Riley Webb and Evian Webb.

"No public service is planned."
