"She was born in McDowell County, and was a daughter of the late Leonard Herman and Kansas Lester Vance, both McDowell County natives.

"Ruth was a graduate of Big Creek High School and received her Master's from Bluefield State. She was a teacher with the McDowell school system for many years and was dedicated to education. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and crocheting. She also liked canning and was a hard worker. She attended Emanuel Baptist Church at War.

"In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters: Vickie Elaine Patterson and an infant daughter; son: Kevin Bowling Patterson; and two sisters: Edith Vance Smith and Nancy Carol Vance.

"Survivors include: Loving husband of 54 years, Harless L. Patterson; sons: Mark Patterson and special friend Joyce Ray of Warriormines and Jordan Patterson of Warriormines; daughter: Kimberly Bowling Patterson of Hawkinsville, Ga.; special grandson: Cody Patterson of the home; sisters: Jean Vance Gallimore of Beaufort, S.C. and June Vance Meador and husband Sherwood of Roanoke, Va.; brother: Sherrill W. "Mary Anne Bailey Lynch, 92, of Pineville, WV, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on July 9, 2018, following a prolonged illness. Born in Cranberry WV, on November 28, 1925, she was the only child of the late Charles Emory and Gladys Florence Bailey.

"Mary Anne graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1943. She was a member of the Snaps Social Club throughout high school and remained close with these friends throughout her life. After graduating, she became an executive secretary for the Greenbrier Dairy.

"In 1946, she married the love of her life, James Richard Lynch, Sr. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Beckley, WV, where she was an active member of the Women’s Guild.

"In 1955, she moved to Pineville with her husband when he took a position as an instructor at the Wyoming County Vocational School where she would live for the remainder of her life.

"Mary Anne was a founding member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church where she actively participated in all church functions and activities.

"Mary Anne had a variety of hobbies. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed playing bridge. She was a former member of the Pineville Women’s Club and the Pineville Garden Club.

"Mary Anne loved to travel and after her husband’s retirement from teaching, she accompanied him to Egypt and Jamaica where he served as an educational consultant.

"While she enjoyed these things, her greatest joy was caring for her husband and children.

"Left to cherish her memory are daughters Karen Anne Lynch of Pineville, WV; Cecilia Hammond (Steve) of Alpharetta, GA; Margarett Roberts (Ron) of Jacksonville, FL; son, James Richard Lynch, Jr. (Lisa) of Charlotte, NC; grandsons Michael Wilson (Angie) of Waverly, WV; Nicholas Wilson, of Pineville, WV; William Lynch of Champaign IL; Adam Lynch of Charlotte, NC; granddaughter, Bailey Anne Lynch of Charlotte, NC; plus, many nieces and nephews whom she loved.
