"Shirley Jeane McKinney, 82, of Covel, passed away on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness."Born July 27, 1936 in Lester, WV, she was the daughter of the late Otho Flint and Anna (Wood) Lewis.
"Ms. McKinney was formerly a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Mullens and was employed at Stratton’s Inc. clothing store in Mullens during earlier years. She was a homemaker afterward, and enjoyed horses, her “varmints”, hunting, and riding thru the mountains in earlier years with her “Babe”. Jeane was a loving and caring person dedicated to her family; always enjoyed cooking and baking wonderful meals and desserts for everyone. She knew no strangers and always had a kind word to say for all she met.
"In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her late husband, Waymon McKinney and former husband, Richard R. “Detroit” Steele, Sr.
"Survivors include a daughter, Debra Green and her husband, John of South Charleston; two sons, Richard Roland “Rick” Steele, Jr. of Mullens, and Russell Kevin “Rusty” Steele formerly of Covel; two brothers, George Ray Lewis and his Zenaida of Chula Vista, CA and Larry David Lewis of Erwin, TN; and one sister, Norma Johnson of Lincolnton, NC; and a host of nieces and nephews.

"Russell Kevin “Rusty” Steele, 54, of Mullens, passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2019 suddenly at his residence."Born September 17, 1965 at Holy Cross Hospital, Detroit, MI, he was the son of the late Richard R. “Detroit” Steele and Shirley Jeane Lewis Steele McKinney.
"He was a 1984 graduate of Mullens High School where he was also a percussionist in the band. Rusty was an avid Nascar fan and never missed a race on TV. He always enjoyed making his rounds through town visiting, talking about cars, chatting with people, and cracking jokes. He never knew a stranger and thought the world of everyone. Rusty had a kind heart and would do anything he could to help anyone in need.
"Rusty was formerly of Covel and after his Mother’s death last December he made his home in Mullens with his brother, where he enjoyed sitting on the porch to have his morning coffee, read the newspaper, and talk with neighbors. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
"In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his stepfather, Waymon McKinney.
"Those left to cherish his memory include his brother, Richard Roland “Rick” Steele of Mullens; his sister, Debra Lynn Green and her husband, John of South Charleston; and a host of many people he regarded deeply as friends.
"A Memorial service will be held 12 Noon, Saturday October 12, 2019 at Pierpoint Freewill Baptist Church, Pierpoint with Rev. Charles “Butch” Acord officiating.
