"Bobbie Joe the son of James A. and Mary E. Ratcliff of Gary WV enlisted in the US Marine Corps on February 24, 1966 in Ashland KY. He arrived in Vietnam and was assigned for duty with Company M, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF."A LVTP-5 Amtrac with Marines onboard was enroute from the Company M Combat Base on Hill 52 to Hill 65 in Dai Loc District when it struck a mine in the vicinity of the Ban Tan village complex. The explosion damaged the vehicle, wounding six men, and resulted in the death of Cpl Rhodes.
"Wounded, and evacuated to the 1st MED Battalion in DaNang, Cpl Ratcliff died within an hour of his arrival from the burns he had sustained as a result of the hostile mine explosion.
