"Joan Hood Peck, 81, was born in Oshkosh, Nebraska on December 8, 1929 to Mr. and Mrs. Lula T. Hood. Soon, the Hood family moved to Camp Creek, West Virginia where Joan received her education and completed a B.S. degree in Education at Marshall College and later, Joan attained a master's degree in Counseling. While still in West Virginia, Joan met and married Dr. Hugh I. Peck.
Over the years, Joan's family lived in several states. However, the past 31 years were spent in Starkville, MS and in Baton Rouge, LA. In Starkville, John H. Peck was an active member of the Newcomer's Club and the Starkville Garden Club. She enjoyed teaching Bridge for Newcomer's Club and as President of the Starkville Garden Club, Joan headed up the planting of the Grandmother's Garden which received national recognition. Joan and her husband, Hugh, were active members of the United Methodist Church in Starkville, MS.
Joan passed away under the gentle care of St. Claire Manor, Life Source Hospice and surrounded by her loving family in Baton Rouge on February 9, 2011. Joan was preceded in death by Dr. Hugh I. Peck, her husband of 41 years and her parents, Mr. Lula T. Hood and Ethel Cantley Hood.
Joan is survived by her brother, Charles A. Hood and his wife, Judy with their six children of Houston, TX. Joan's daughters are Sandra Charlene Peck Belena and husband Dr. John F. Belena of Houston, TX and Cynthia Ann Peck Hall and husband, Dr. William L. Hall of Baton Rouge, LA. Joan is survived by three grandchildren, Lucas D. Biggers and wife Amy of Wakeforest, N.C., Stephanie H. Geddings and husband Chris of Pittsborough, N.C., and Lydia H. Jumonville, the mother of Joan's great grandchildren, Lance and Preston Jumonville, also of Baton Rouge, LA.
All of us love and will dearly miss Joan Peck, our loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, until one by one, we meet again with Jesus in heaven.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 12, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Gardens Park Cemetery in Starkville."

"Mrs. Sparks was a cook for Wyoming County Schools at Pineville High School and Glen Fork Grade School for 20 years. She enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles and picture puzzles. She was a member of Glen Fork Baptist Temple and also attended Oceana First Baptist Church. She loved her best friend and pet, Lila. Mrs. Sparks will be dearly missed by her family.
"In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde "Ray" Sparks (1918-1993); a son, Austin "Buddy" Sparks (1942-1977); a daughter, Rita Sparks-Quesenberry (Deceased).
