"Wow! So sorry! I just found your notes to me! I am so grateful! Be certain, you DID provide some info I was lacking! I have seen a Henretta Nowlin Lester in Pa but I cannot connect the dots in order to know whether she is ours or not. I have seen an Alphonso Hopkins, the name of her other son, in the Baltimore, MD area. I don't know whether he is my Henretta's son or not. The Henretta in Person county, NC I know is the right person because her dad died and she sent regrets that she would not be able to get there. It is as though they suddenly were gone, without clues to where. I saw that she had another son whose name was William Henry, I think, and at least one daughter. I find no marriage date for her and Mr. Lester; no children; no dates of death, no clues to them in NC. Her mother was Mary McClanahan Nowlin whose death date is unknown to me. When her father and Mary got married, they and his father were all listed as white. Perhaps, at some point, they began what is called "passing" and that has hidden them. I just do not know. The information on the Penns helps me know more about them. They left Mercer county, WV and moved to Scioto county, OH -- a recent find for me -- with some of Pearl Lena's grandchildren going on to California and Franklin county, OH. It surprises me that there was so much movement of people and how far many travelled to live. Again, my sincere thanks! Bit by bit, I'm learning about my folks and I feels so great every time I gain a new nugget! My most frustrating, years without progress mystery is who were the parents and siblings of Rebecca and Joseph Nowlin? They are in Abingdon, Washington county, Va in 1880 but were either not there in 1870 or dodged the census takers. After about 20 years work, I found he died 10 May 1888. But, despite all efforts, I cannot find him anywhere n 1870, unless he is the man by the same name I find in Monroe, WV who is listed as white. I have searched Lee, Henry, Patrick, Rappahannock, Grayson, Charles City, McDowell, Mercer, Smyth, Pulaski and Halifax counties to no avail. I've searched "free people of color" registers, birth and marriage records, all to no avail! Any suggestions as to what I can do next? Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!"
