"Killed in action in Vietnam by enemy small arms fire in Quang Tin Province when his unit was ambushed. He was part of the BLT-1/3, 1st. Bn, 3rd. Marine Regiment (FMF). He and his unit were airlifted from the USS Okinawa, a helicopter carrier to perform assaults against the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces. On April 28, 1967, he and his unit were helo lifted into the Que Son Valley of Quang Tin Province."It was May 3, 1967 and after a very hot day of search, they called off the mission. Heavy automatic and small arms fire erupted earlier in the evening and lasted just past midnight.
"Besides Tommy, 13 of his Marine brothers were killed that night in the ambush. The operation was Operation Beaver Cage-Union and was also known as the "Water run ambush".
