Survivors include his wife, Lennie, four sons, Danny, John, Donald, and Ronald and a daughter, Pamela Jane all at home; his mother Mrs. Zora Shrewsbury Mitchem; four brothers, Ransom of Crumpler, Hansford of Morgantown, Frank of Bluefield, and Grady of Oceana.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 am Thursday in the North Tazewell Church. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery."

"GARY - Lennie Jane Bailey Mitchem, 84, of McDowell Continuous Care Center, formerly of Tazewell, Va., died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002 at St. Luke's Hospital, Bluefield."Born July 5, 1918, in Matoaka, she was the daughter of the late Orville H. Bailey and Fannie Shrewsbury Bailey.
"She was a former cook with the Tazewell County School System, and was affiliated with the Pentecostal faith.
"In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stevenson Mitchem; a daughter, Judy Marie Mitchem; five brothers, Tholly, Sebert, Lester, Ward and Dexter Bailey; and three sisters, Stella B. Honaker, Lola V. Bailey and Vida E. Bailey.
"She is survived by four sons, Danny Mitchem and wife, Clara of Chattanooga, Tenn., John Mitchem and wife, Eva of El Paso, Texas, Ronald Mitchem of Bluefield, and Donald Mitchem and wife, Dixie of Tazewell; one daughter, Pamela Akers and husband, Steven of Welch; one brother, Leonard Bailey of Princeton; one sister, Arlene M. Belcher of Dayton, Ohio; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
"Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Douglas Mortuary Chapel in Welch with the Rev. Stephen Walker officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery, Tazewell.
