"BLUEFIELD -- John A. "Red" Smith, age 91, of 801 Frederick Street, Bluefield, died on Sunday, October 21, 2007 at his residence.

"Born on August 26, 1916 in Maybeury, he was a son of the late John William and Beulah E. Perdue Smith. He had been a resident of Bluefield for 44 years and was of the Methodist faith. He was a retired painter and coal miner, and was a member of the UMWA.

"In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy V. Canoy Smith; a stepson, Thomas W. Canoy; two brothers, Daniel C. and Noah Smith; and two sisters, Gladys E. Fisher and Virginia Smith Terry. He was the last surviving member of his family.

"Survivors include: Stepson: Phillip Canoy and wife Teresa of Lebanon, Va.; stepdaughter-in-law: Wilma Canoy of Greensboro, N.C.; three nephews: Bill Smith and wife Jean of Elliston, Va., Taylor Smith and wife Judy of Bluefield, William Michael Fisher and wife Judy of Laredo, Texas; one niece: Judith C. Fisher Fletcher of Bluefield; six step grandchildren: David Canoy, Beth Ashburn and husband Danny, Michael Canoy and wife Cindy, Daniel Canoy, Suzannah Sparks and husband Junior, Nicholas Canoy.

"Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at 12:00 noon with the Rev. Bill Smith and Dr. Allen Hammond officiating. Entombment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Bluewell with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

"Friends may call on Tuesday (today) from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

"Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell is serving the Smith family...."
