"Born on February 21, 1922 near Welch WV, he was the son of the late Harley and Maggie Carpenter Mahaffey.
He was a proud Navy Veteran, having served in World War II, he worked as a mechanic at Mabe Cartwright Motors in Welch. He retired in 1984 after working for U.S. Steel in Gary WV for many years. He loved old cars and was an avid N.A.S.C.A.R. fan. He enjoyed wood working and was an accomplished gardener. He was devoted to his Family and Friends.
"In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by, three brothers, Paul Mahaffey, J.P. Mahaffey, and Clifford Mahaffey, and one sister, Emogene Underwood.

He was born on July 21, 1944, in Welch, West Virginia, to Ethel and Everett Birchfield."Steve grew up in a close-knit, Christian home, surrounded by love from his sister, Carol, and brothers, Tom and Charles. His earliest school days were spent in a one-room schoolhouse in Bee Branch, where he first learned the values of hard work, faith, and kindness. He later graduated from Iaeger High School, holding onto his Iaeger Cubs pride for the rest of his life.
"From an early age, Steve had an insatiable curiosity and a love for reading. As a boy, he would sneak down to the cellar just to get lost in a good book, even the great epics of Homer, The Iliad and The Odyssey. His hunger for knowledge stayed with him his whole life.
"After high school, Steve moved to Indiana to live with his uncles, Syd and Emzy Allen. Soon after, he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as an electronics specialist. The skills he learned there became the foundation for his long and respected career as an electrician, a trade he worked in until his well-earned retirement.
"While Steve’s work gave him purpose, his greatest joy came from his family. During a visit back home to West Virginia, he reconnected with Freda, a girl he’d known since those one-room schoolhouse days. She quickly became the love of his life, and the two built a beautiful 57-year marriage filled with devotion, laughter, and steadfast love. Together, they raised two wonderful children and were blessed with two cherished grandchildren.
"Steve will be remembered for his gentle heart, quick wit, and unwavering faith. He had a way of making everyone feel valued and loved, and he gave generously of his time and talents to family, friends, and neighbors.
"He is survived by his devoted wife, Freda Birchfield; daughter, Stephanie (Glenn) Young; son, Stephen Birchfield, Jr.; grandchildren, Leif Young and Lake Young; sister, Carol Jones; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. "Lawyer Bailey Jr., 80, of Bull Creek, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday, September 15, 2024."His life was a testimony for the miraculous and awe-inspiring power of God, taking a young man from Long Branch and transforming him into a faithful man of God.
"Lawyer was born on May 18, 1944 in Blackey, VA. He married the love of his life in 1962 before setting off to Chicago, IL, where he worked as a supervisor at Ada Metals and became a proud parent to his son. After several years, the mountains of West Virginia called him home so Lawyer returned and became involved with the coal mining industry. He owned and operated several mines in the area, while also running the Bailey Grocery Store on Bull Creek. During this time, he also became a proud parent to his daughter. Lawyer attended Iaeger High School then furthered his education at Liberty University where he earned an A.S. in Theology.
"After retiring Lawyer spent his time with his family, as his granddaughters and great granddaughters were treasures in his eyes. You could find him on Bull Creek walking every day, trying to get the most amount of steps in and enjoying fellowship with his community. Lawyer loved reminiscing on the days of old, sure to tell a funny story about his many adventures growing up with a childhood comparable to that of Tom Sawyer.
"Lawyer loved staying in Morgantown, WV and attending his granddaughter’s college Bible study group. He made many friends there, with everybody adopting him as their own Poppy. Every person who met Lawyer could not help but to love him, an endearing trait that will dearly be missed.
"Lawyer spent the majority of his life serving the Lord, spreading the Gospel as an evangelical pastor before settling, and retiring, at the Greenbrier Freewill Baptist Church. You would find him watching Charles Stanley (and Gunsmoke) every day, studying his Bible constantly. Lawyer had a passion for the Lord, seeking to grow closer to Him always.
"The greatest impact Lawyer had was not only showing others the love of Jesus, but spreading kindness, compassion, and generosity to both friends and strangers. If nothing else is gathered from his testimony, Lawyer would want every person reading this to come to know Jesus Christ. God in the flesh came to this Earth, lived a perfect life, died an innocent man, and rose on the third day so that every person may receive the gift of salvation and eternal life. His favorite verses were Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Many were blessed to hear the Gospel preached by Lawyer with countless souls being discipled and led to Christ. Hearing the deep knowledge and understanding Lawyer had for the Bible truly encompassed the biblical scholar and man of God he was.

"Zink “Duke” Bailey, Jr. left this world and entered into the Kingdom of Heaven on October 22nd, 2024. His final moments were spent beneath a well-lit Christmas tree, listening to some of his favorite songs with his daughter and sister, Ashleigh and Wilma."Duke was born on June 18th, 1957 in Iaeger, WV at Clark’s Clinic. He was the son of Zink Bailey, Sr. and Myrtle Workman Bailey, who were without question waiting alongside Jesus to greet him. He was preceded in death by both of his parents, as well as his sister, Glenda Bailey, his brother, Gene Bailey, his nephews, Nicholas Ryan Akers and Rockie Bailey, and two brothers-in-law, Junior Bailey and Harold Cline.
"Those who remain on earth to treasure his memory include his daughter, Ashleigh Bailey (Matthew) Dotson, his son, Conner Ethan Bailey, his step-daughter, Laura Hensdill Martin, and an honorary son, Matthew Bailey. Duke had two grandchildren, Tanner and Ella Dotson, with whom he created beautiful memories, and one step-grandson, Samuel Martin. In addition to his children and grandchildren, Duke left behind three of his beloved sisters, including Wilma (Darrell) Prevento, Freda (Stephen) Birchfield, and Madeline (Harold) Cline, as well as a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins. Duke left behind one former wife, Kathy Bailey, who remained like family and a sister to his siblings, and a sister-in-law, Barbara Bailey.
"Duke was an avid fan of rock music. His musical taste was impeccable and he loved to “rock out” at the maximum volume. This trait would eventually be passed down to his daughter, whom recalls fondly the two of them jamming together on long car rides. In his spare time, Duke enjoyed making other people laugh, and would often be found cracking jokes at family functions. He was also a devoted fan of wrestling, pick-up trucks, and Walker Texas Ranger.
"In the “good ole days,” Duke was a truck driver, having started up his own trucking company with a black Mack coal truck. However, during his time as a truck driver, his most prized possession became his purple International coal truck. It should be noted Duke’s amazing sense of humor carried over into his career, and he would often be “carrying on” with friends over the CB.
"Services will be held at the Chapel of Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger, WV Saturday, October 26, 2024 at 1 o’clock with Pastor Scott Long officiating. Matthew Bailey, Chris Bailey, Matthew Dotson and other family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Duke will be laid to rest at the Bailey Cemetery on Bull Creek.
