He attended Welch High School and joined the U.S. Navy, proudly serving his country for twenty two years. He served in the Korean and Vietnam wars and the Cuban Missile Crisis. After retiring from the Navy, he obtained his teaching degree and taught carpentry at the McDowell County Vocational School, from where he retired after seventeen years of service.
