"PRINCETON ? Mr. Harold Vernon Howerton, 75, of 165 Butternut Drive, Princeton died early Wednesday morning, Jan. 4, 2006 at his residence after a courageous 14 year battle with prostate cancer.

"Born Aug. 31, 1930, at Lamar, he was the son of the late Fred Vernon Howerton and Ethel Shrewsbury King.

"Mr. Howerton was educated in Princeton, served his country with the U.S. Army, then returned to Princeton to begin a career with the Norfolk Western and Norfolk Southern Railroads that spanned a period of more than 40 years. He served for many years as secretary/treasurer for the United Transportation Union and was a member of Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. He was a member of the Burke Memorial Baptist Church on Thorn Street in Princeton where he served as a Deacon. He was a member of the AF&AM Lodge 134, Princeton and member of the Beni Kedem Temple Charleston. Mr. Howerton was a member of the Princeton Moose Lodge No. 1521.

"In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Larry Vernon Howerton.

"Mr. Howerton was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and had never met a stranger. He was a generous and committed friend to all he knew.

"Survivors include his loving and caring wife of 56 years, Gracie Lusk Howerton; three daughters, Peggy Spangler and husband Conrad of Charlottesville, Va., Sherri Branski and husband Neal of Raleigh, N.C., Nancy Sullivan and husband Bruce of Huntington; four grandchildren, Conrad Theodore Spangler IV (Ted), Harold Thomas Spangler (Tommy), Nicholas Joseph Branski, Sarah Grace Branski; two great-grandchildren, Conrad Theodore Spangler V and Franklin Harold Spangler; three sisters. Madelyn Conaway of Crownsville, Md., Frances Gregory of Apopka, Fla., and Maxine Rhinehart of Princeton

"A service of celebration will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Kevin Howerton and Tom Carpenter officiating. Entombment will follow in the Resthaven Memorial Park Mausoleum in Princeton..."
