"BELMONT, N.C. - L.E. 'Moon' Mullins, 71, of 4715 S. New Hope Rd., died Jan. 29, 2004 at Gaston Memorial Hospital, Gastonia, N.C. "A native of Jolo, he was the son of the late Paul Lee and Theresa Wyatt Mullins. "A graduate of Iaeger High School, he was a Navy veteran and a self-employed machinist and fabricator, operating Moon's Machine Company in Belmont for a number of years. He was an avid hobbyist in beekeeping, and had been a member of the North Carolina Beekeeper's Association for a number of years; he was named the North Carolina Beekeeper of the year in 2003 at the annual convention held in Charlotte, N.C. He was also active in the local Parents without Partners group. "He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Eugene Mullins; and sisters, Alice Wysor, Betty Mullins, Pauline Rose, and Margaret Mullins. "Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Stephanie Mullins of Mt. Pleasant, N.C.; a brother, Mike Mullins of Jolo; sisters, Josephine West of Grundy, Va., Maxine Mullins of Whitewood, Va., Brenda Christian of Manassas, Va., Janice Altvater of Beckley, Patricia Weinhardt of Fredericksburg, Va., and Sharon Rose of Jolo; former wife, Shirley Irene B. Mullins of Gastonia; five grandchildren, Amber Mauldin and Moneik Cheshire of Gastonia, Terina Zackery of Los Angeles, Calif., Michael Cothran of Oakboro, N.C. and Stacy Mullins of Mt. Pleasant; and three great-grandchildren, Alican, Caitlynn, and Jasmine; and a number of nieces and nephews.
"Funeral will be held at noon Monday at Fanning Funeral Home, Iaeger, conducted by Harold Thornsburg and Hobert Kennedy. Interment will follow in Sparks Cemetery, McDowell County..."

"NORTH WELCH - Mazie E. Lester Green, 86, of North Welch, formerly of Bud Mountain, was called to her heavenly home on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, in a Bluefield hospital following a short illness. "Born Jan. 10, 1918, at Bud, she was the daughter of the late Harmon and Polly Jane (Lester) Lester. "Mrs. Green was a homemaker, and had been a member of the New Hope Regular Baptist Church for many years, and loved her Lord.
"In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Green; a son, Arnie Green; and five brothers. "Those left to mourn her loss include her children: Two sons, Lawrence Green Jr. and wife, Pat of Covington, Wash., and Melvin Green and wife, Ruth of North Welch; five daughters: Daisy Criss and husband, Cecil of Itmann, Hazel Coomes and husband, Ronnie of Covel, Nelva Hurley and husband, James of East Bernstadt, Ky., Vesta Hurley and husband, Thomas of Welch-Pineville Road, Sherry Morgan and husband, Jerry of North Welch; 22 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Maxine Woosley of St. Albans, Vivian Shrewsbury of Virginia, Teresa Cross of Florida, and Lucille Drake of Delaware; and a brother, Charles Raye of Indiana. "Services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens with the Rev. Don Bowles officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Family Cemetery on Bud Mountain..."
