"Stephen Ray "Poppy" Johnston, 70, of Hanover, WV went home to be with the Lord on Saturday October
20, 2018 in Logan Regional Medical Center, Logan, WV. He was born on January 19, 1948 in Rock House
Mountain, WV a son of the late Onnie Dee and Thelma Mae Jones Johnston. Stephen is a United States Army
Veteran where he served in Korea with the 567th Med. Co (AMB), a member of the UMWA, he worked 33
1/2 years as a belt mechanic in the mines and retired from Pinnacle Mining in 2003 and attended Hanover
Missionary Baptist Church. Stephen loved going to church, working in the garden, being outdoors watching
the birds. He enjoyed doing wood work and loved spending time with his family and friends. He always put
others first and enjoyed helping people out. Poppy loved hanging out with his "side kick" granddaughter
Holly. Above all Stephen loved God and serving him. He will be deeply missed by family and friends. In
addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a brother Ralph Johnston; a sister Eleanor Woolum; an
infant brother Frank Johnston; and an infant sister. Survivors include his loving wife of almost 51 years
Janice Paulette Miller Johnston; a daughter Erin Darlena (Robert) Blankenship of Rock House Mountain; a
son Stephen Christopher Johnston of Rock House Mountain; four sisters Francis Thomas of Briar Creek,
Kitty Jean Lester of Berlin Center, OH, Rosemary (Mark) Andrews of Walker Town, NC and Eva Gail
(Michael) Hamilton of Land O Lakes, FL; a brother Kenneth (Jerline) Johnston of Ballard; four grandchildren
Shannon, Christopher, Logan and Holly; three great grandchildren Emma, Wesley and Conner; three step
granddaughters Keeylie, Keylsie and Kirstin; his best friend Homer Hatfield, Jr. of Lynco; his pet chicken
Itdle Biddle; and a host of other loving family and friends. Funeral services will be held at Noon on Monday
October 29th in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, WV with Rev. Jackie Lester officiating.
He will be laid to rest in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, WV. Friends may gather with the family from
5-8PM on Sunday October 28th at the funeral home. The Wyoming County Veterans Honor Guard will
conduct Military Rites. Pallbearers will be family and friends. The family would like to thank the Hanover
fire Department for their prompt assist and care of the family. Would like to thank all of those who helped
