"BARKERS RIDGE — Louie “Aven” McKinney, 72, of Barkers Ridge, died Thursday, August 12, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family following a long and courageous battle with cancer."Born December 22, 1937 to the late Robert Nelson and Daisy Garrettson McKinney.
"Mr. McKinney was a life long resident of Barkers Ridge. He worked for the Glen Company/WV engineering of Mullens for 22 years, having retired in the late 70’s. Mr. McKinney was an avid gardner and coon hunter, he enjoyed visiting with family and friends. He will forever be known for always having something funny to say.
"He was preceded in death by brothers, Byron McKinney, Robert Gale McKinney, James Paul McKinney and Gid Franklin McKinney; sisters, Leona June Blevins and Roberta Jane Akers; half sisters and brothers preceding him in death include, Clercy McKinney, Coetta McKinney, Cleo McKinney, Daisy McKinney, Dathell McKinney Mullens, Hobert McKinney, Lacy P. McKinney, Holland McKinney, Alvin McKinney and Darst McKinney.
"Those left to cherish “Paw Paw’s” memory his wife, Alberta Mills McKinney, his children, Dennis Aven McKinney and wife Brenda of Westfield, N.C., daughter, Anna Louise McKinney and her companion Ivan Kelly of Beartown; three grandchildren whom he raised, Samantha Dawn McKinney and husband Harlen of Basin, Andrea April McKinney and companion John Hubner of Mullens and Evan Scott McKinney of the home; four other grandchildren, Jarrett and Dylan Shrewsbury of North Carolina and Paige and Summer Kelly of Beartown. His only living sister, Cora Jean Burnette of Florida. Other survivors include special nieces and nephews, Kyle and Harley McKinney, Tina Mills Blankenship, Scott Mills and “Little” Dylan Justice. Mr. McKinney also leaves behind a host of neighborhood Children who lovingly called him Paw Paw; a special daughter in law Crystal James and husband Gene of Princeton.
"Funeral services will be held Sunday August 15, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the Mountaineer Baptist Church at the top of Stephenson Mountain with Rev. Hugh McKinney officiating. Friends may call today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the church and one hour prior to services on Sunday. Burial will follow at the home place on Barkers Ridge..."
