"BRENTON — William "Ray" Shields, 75, of Brenton, passed on to a new life on Sunday, July 27, 2008."Born May 1, 1933, at McDowell County, he was the son of the late Clarence Shields and Myrtle Belcher-Shields.
"He was an employee of Consolidated Natural Gas Company for 42 years. He was a member of the Clear Fork Church of God and was a lifetime servant and lover of Jesus Christ. Mr. Shields was considered a friend to everyone he met. He was patriarch to his family, whose love for him is endless.
"Ray was a man of great character, integrity and nobility. He was full of kindness to others and had a smile and uplifting word for anyone he met. He will be truly and deeply missed.
"In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Patsy Shields-Collins, and her husband, Eddie Collins.
"He is survived by the love of his life for 56 years, Violet Gay Stewart-Shields (1931-2010) of the residence; a son, Mike Shields and his wife, Margaret, of Brenton; granddaughters, Lisa M. "Born April 21, 1931, at Clear Fork, she was the beautiful daughter of the late Charles Gillis and Minnie Edna Walker Stewart. "Violet was employed by the Wyoming County Board School System as one of their best cooks, for 25 years. She was a member of the Clear Fork Valley Church of God. "Violet was a beloved wife, a mother, a grandmother, a singer, an awesome cook, a sounding board, a shopping buddy, a list maker, a peacemaker, a true lady, a person of merry and great hospitality, a true knowledge of current events, witty yet soft spoken, a beautiful smile, sparkling eyes, a woman of compassion and integrity, a lover of her family and her Savior. "She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone she met or saw. She was the matriarch and core of her family, whose love for her lives on forever. Violet believed that a real Christian “is someone who lives every day as if it were their last and loved God with their whole heart and soul.” "Her favorite scripture was John 3:16 and her favorite hymn was “Amazing Grace.” The things she valued most were her Savior, her family and her church family. She and “her Ray” spent family dinners with them every week, and they vacationed together every year. Her kitchen was the heart of the family. It always had something good cooking in it and she always wanted it that way.
