"BRENTON — William "Ray" Shields, 75, of Brenton, passed on to a new life on Sunday, July 27, 2008."Born May 1, 1933, at McDowell County, he was the son of the late Clarence Shields and Myrtle Belcher-Shields.
"He was an employee of Consolidated Natural Gas Company for 42 years. He was a member of the Clear Fork Church of God and was a lifetime servant and lover of Jesus Christ. Mr. Shields was considered a friend to everyone he met. He was patriarch to his family, whose love for him is endless.
"Ray was a man of great character, integrity and nobility. He was full of kindness to others and had a smile and uplifting word for anyone he met. He will be truly and deeply missed.
"In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Patsy Shields-Collins, and her husband, Eddie Collins.
"He is survived by the love of his life for 56 years, Violet Gay Stewart-Shields (1931-2010) of the residence; a son, Mike Shields and his wife, Margaret, of Brenton; granddaughters, Lisa M.
