"It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Vonnie Jean Hatfield Walls, 87, who went to be with her Lord and Savior on August 13, 2025 at her home. She was born in Coal Mountain, WV, a beloved soul whose warmth, wisdom, and unwavering kindness touched the lives of all who knew her. Vonnie departed this life peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love and grace. Born with a generous heart, the daughter of Onnie and Maggie Hatfield, one of eighteen children. Vonnie dedicated her life to nurturing others whether through her friendships, or her family. She had a gift for making people feel seen and loved, and her laughter could light up even the darkest room. Her compassion for Jesus Christ was boundless, her strength quiet but fierce, and her presence a source of comfort and joy. Vonnie was a devoted, loving mother and homemaker. She found beauty in the everyday and taught those around her to do the same. Her legacy lives on in the stories she shared, the lives she uplifted, and the love she gave so freely. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her and remembered always with affection and admiration. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by sixteen brothers and sisters and sons Doyle Walls and Joseph Walls. She is survived by daughter’s Joyce Walls Bastin and husband David from Columbia, TN, Viola Ward and husband Jeff from Hanover, Lisa Shuart from Hanover, and Marlena Leon from Seattle, WA, a brother Roger Hatfield from Lynco, twelve grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and a host of other loving family and friends. A celebration of Vonnie’s life will be held at 1 pm on Monday, August 18th in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, WV with Rev. Landon Kennedy officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Hatfield Cemetery, Coal Mountain, WV. Friends may gather with the family from 12 pm until time of service on Monday at the funeral home. Friends and family are invited to gather, share memories, and honor the remarkable woman she was. Pallbearers will be family and friends. "NEWHALL — Ernest “Ernie” Whitaker, age 91, of Newhall, W.Va., died Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell, Va. Born April 27, 1919 at Big Creek, W.Va., he was a son of the late Mike Whitaker and Fannie Dillion Whitaker. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was awarded the Silver Star in August of 1945. He served in Luzon, Northern Solomons and also received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars; the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Ribbon. He was a retired coal miner from Consolidation Coal Company with over forty years of service at Berwind, Newhall #6, and Jenkinjones mines where he retired in 1981. Mr. Whitaker was a member of the UMWA, District 29, Local #7173 for sixty-five years. After retirement, he was active in his community, local and state government affairs. In February 2008, he was awarded co-citizen of the year and being one of the oldest voters in West Virginia, was inducted into West Virginia Hall of Fame by the McDowell County Commission. He was a very loving person who touched many lives. He especially loved sitting on the benches at Wal-Mart and the Claypool Hill Mall. Mr. Whitaker was a lifetime member of the NRA and a member of the Neighborhood Watch. He will be sadly missed.
