Walmart associate and worked on Hurricane relief when needed. He never met a stranger and was loved by

"NEWHALL — Ernest “Ernie” Whitaker, age 91, of Newhall, W.Va., died Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell, Va. Born April 27, 1919 at Big Creek, W.Va., he was a son of the late Mike Whitaker and Fannie Dillion Whitaker. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was awarded the Silver Star in August of 1945. He served in Luzon, Northern Solomons and also received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars; the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Ribbon. He was a retired coal miner from Consolidation Coal Company with over forty years of service at Berwind, Newhall #6, and Jenkinjones mines where he retired in 1981. Mr. Whitaker was a member of the UMWA, District 29, Local #7173 for sixty-five years. After retirement, he was active in his community, local and state government affairs. In February 2008, he was awarded co-citizen of the year and being one of the oldest voters in West Virginia, was inducted into West Virginia Hall of Fame by the McDowell County Commission. He was a very loving person who touched many lives. He especially loved sitting on the benches at Wal-Mart and the Claypool Hill Mall. Mr. Whitaker was a lifetime member of the NRA and a member of the Neighborhood Watch. He will be sadly missed.
