The son of James Everett and Oma Addair Sparks, he was preceded in death by his parents, his infant sister Marlene, his brothers E.C. and Darrell Sparks, and his sister-in-law Debbie Sparks. Swanson enjoyed watching westerns, visiting town and socializing, and going to yard sales and thrift stores with his favorite cousin, Vickie Ball. In his younger years, he was a paper carrier for the Welch Daily News. He is survived by his brother Ernest Sparks of Princeton; two sisters in law, Bonnie Sparks of Jolo and Tina Sparks Stinson of Bradshaw; three nieces, Kim Mueller, Darlene Shepherd, and Tiffany Sparks Hanna; nine nephews, Jamie Sparks, Ernest Cooper, Kevin Sparks, Travis Sparks, Terry Sparks, Mike Sparks, Jerry Sparks, Randy Sparks, and Jeff Clagg; and his closest friend - his cousin Vickie Addair Ball, her husband Chester, and their children Charlotte Ball, Marie Owens, and Billy Ball.
