He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean conflict. "He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Toney Burks on Oct. 17, 2001. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. "Survivors include: Daughters: Teresa Burks of Charlotte, N.C. and Debbie Day and husband Ray of Tazewell, Va.; son: Lacey Burks Jr. of Advance, N.C.; grandchildren: James Ray Day Jr., Joseph Day, Rebecca Shrewsbury and Jessica Burks; five great grandchildren also survive.
