"Mr. Cowan "Bun" Hughes, Jr., 87, of English, WV passed from his earthly journey Monday, November 14, 2011 from his residence.

"Bun was born June 8, 1924, the son of the late William Cowan Hughes and Nannie Belle Jessie Hughes at Lebanon, Russell County, Virginia. Mr. Hughes was a proud veteran of the US Navy, having served during World War II and honorably discharged with the rank of Seaman First Class. He served aboard the USS Noa and the USS Grand Canyon. He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal. He was a retired coal miner and member of the UMWA. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. In helping the youth of the Bradshaw area, he was a volunteer Boy Scout Leader and a volunteer of the Bartley Little League. He was the last surviving member of his original family.

"He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Carol Ann Johnson Hughes of the home; two sons, Timothy Dwayne Hughes and Tyler Jamison Hughes, both of English, WV; a daughter, Vera Danita Barlow Evans of Ohio; a sister-in-law, Helen Hughes of Bradshaw; and numerous nieces and nephews.

"Funeral services will be held Friday, November 18, 2011 at 12 noon at the Jesus Church of Bartley, WV with Reverend Roger Pete Woods officiating. Burial will follow in the Click Family Cemetery, Bradshaw, WV. Military graveside honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post 175 of Bradshaw and VFW Post 1144 of Iaeger. .."

"In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Ned Rowe; a daughter Sparkle Lester; a grandson Patrick Hopkins; and four brothers, Leroy, Defoy, Loy and Robert Coy Hughes.
"Survivors include two sons, Randy Rowe and wife Debbie of Statesville, NC and Ronnie Lee Rowe of Leesville, LA; a daughter Christal Muncy and Estil Blankenship of String Town, WV; one brother, Troy Hughes of Indiana; a son-in-law, Robert Lester of Three Forks, WV; two special friends, Martin and Georgia West; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; four step grandchildren; eleven great step grandchildren; five great-great step grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
