"Mr. Mullens was of the Baptist faith. He worked for Eastern Associated Coal, Kopperston No. 2 Mines, and was a member of Local Union 7604. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors. "Cynthia was 20 years old, when the influenza epidemic hit in 1918. her son Reece was 3 1/2 years old and Daughter Lydia was 17 months old, This flu had been coming in spurts. But a major out-break in 1918, people were dying all around us, neighbors, family, friends, some entire families down (ill) with no one to wait on them (care for them). Oh Lordy!! None of our old herb remedies worked, we knew not how to whip this thing. A Doctor came by from out of VA, just shook his head, They hadn't come up against anything like this, what a totally helpless feeling, Cynthia knew she was going to die. She had never cut her hair, it was real long, she said; mother after I die cut my hair off and keep it. Which I did, and she said; Tell daddy that pretty stone I showed him one day in the woods above the cemetery, to please bring it down and place it for my head stone. She died the next day. We didn't understand what this was that was killing so many people, yet in some household's children survived and so did some old people, and then again it wiped out entire families. It was a scary time. I think most people thought the world was coming to an end.""When Cynthia died, Reece was 3 years old and Lydia was 17 months old. Compton was working and leaving the children alone in the house, So they were taken and raised by their grandparents Reece and Zelphia Blankenship."
