"Born Jan. 8, 1920, in Wyoming County, she was the daughter of the late Author and Ollie Stewart. "Mrs. Berta was a homemaker. "In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Berta, Sr.; a son, Connie Ray Berta; a daughter, Margaret McCoy; and several infant children. "Survivors include her children, Billie Jo Spence and her husband James of Highland, Ind., John Berta, Jr., and his wife Sue of Irma, S.C., Martelia Berta Myers Blankenship of Kopperston, Odett Toler and her husband Douglas of Oceana, Robert Berta of Beckley, Tony Berta and his wife Mary of Oceana, James Berta of Oceana, and Thomas Berta and his wife Tatiana of Stafford, Va.; two adopted children, Michelle Williams and her husband Keith and Troy Berta, all of North Carolina; 21 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. "Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Evans Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with the Rev. Herb Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Stewart Cemetery, Matheny..."
