His grandfather, Charles Ferguson Stewart, was married eight times, to six
women, two of them he remarried. They were: Eunice Emily Roach in 1866;
Parthena Walker in 1880; Victoria Wills Cooper in 1914; Rosa Wills in 1919
and 1927; Bessie Workman in 1925 and 1928; and finally Columbia Daniels in
1930. He also fathered nine children with Mary Jane Workman whom he never
married; however, he provided her a home and their children shared as heirs
in his estate.

"Notes for CHARLES FERGUSON STEWART: "As I promised I am sending a brief sketch concerning Charle s Ferguson (Charlie Ferg) Stewart. "I vaguely remember my great grandfather Charles Ferguson St ewart. My mother used to take me with her to visit him at t he mouth of Coon Branch, Matheny, West Virginia. By then h e was old and feeble and was being cared for by Aunt Lake a nd Uncle Andy Stewart who were living with him at the time . I remember Uncle Andy's boys, Alfred, Perry, Coy, et. al. , playing a game called "round town" with a sponge ball in the yard at Grandpa Charlie's house using the great tree s in his yard as bases. The house later burned down. Anothe r game they played involved one team tossing the ball ove r the house to another which tried to catch it. The secon d team was warned that the ball was coming, but they couldn 't "peek" to see when or where on the roofline it would fal l. If the receiving team managed to catch the ball on the f ly or as it rolled off the roof, that was a license to chas e the other team and try to throw and hit one of the opposi ng players, who upon being thusly tagged had to change side s for subsequent rounds. (The name of the game sounded some thing like "anytony over" Come on list, give me some help . What was the game? What were the rules?) ""Charlie Ferg" Stewart was the son of Charles and Nancy (Co oke) Stewart and thus he was a direct decendent of the first two original settlers of Wyoming County, Captain Ralph St ewart and John Cooke, Sr.. He was born December 6, 1844, a t Matheny, West Virginia (VA) and was married eight times
including two wives which he divorced and remarried. (See FO WC, Vol. 11, Pg. 12.) His marriages were as follows: Eunic e Emily Roach, 1866; Parthena Walker, 1880; Victoria (Wills ) Cooper, 1914; Rosa Wills, 1919 and 1927; Bessie Workman , 1925 and 1928; and Columbia Daniels, 1930. "Although Charles fathered several children out of wedlock , it is remembered by those who knew him that he always ins isted that he support them and contribute to their educatio n. He was the father of nine children by Mary Jane Workman , whom he never married. He provided a home for Mary Jane
and her family within sight of where he and his legal wife , Parthenia, lived, and Mary Jane's children shared with hi s legitimate children as heirs of his estate. "Charles Ferguson Stewart was a very shrewd and successful f armer, stock raiser, land trader and businessman who grew u p with little or no formal education. He inherited a part o f the Beaver Dam Tract of land near Matheny, West Virgini a from his father. He added many other tracts on his own. He lived all his life on the family farm at Matheny. "Many stories are remembered about "Uncle Charlie," as he wa s known by most people in the community of Matheny, particu larly with respect to his exploits with the opposite sex. However, he was a colorful character in many other ways as w ell. He was elected Wyoming County Clerk, 1897-1902, yet he could neither read nor write. His nephew Alonzo Stewart a cted as office deputy and did most of the actual work. Charles used the position of clerk to enable him to acquire var ious valuable land parcels in Wyoming County. "Charles was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church an d a liberal financial supporter of his church and pastor. " His charity and generosity were never excelled; widows and needy orphans were never sent away from his house empty handed." (From the "Obituary of Chas. Ferg. Goode also noted that Grandpa Charlie had lived a wretched life (my words, not Goodes, same message), but before he died he had made peace with his maker. "Charles is buried between two of his wives, Parthenia and V ictoria, in the Stewart Family Cemetery located near the mo uth of Mountain Hollow at Matheny, West Virginia. His unmarried partner, Mary Jane Workman, is buried in the other Stewart Cemetary at Matheny located across the river to the
north on State Route 10. "It is interesting to note that grandpa Charlie was chasin g two of my great grandmamas, .... at least. Victoria (Will s) Cooper was the widow of Thomas Jackson Cooper, another o f my great grandfathers. She was the mother of two of grandpa Charlie's sons-in-law and later his son Perry Stewart.
