"Sarah Bailey Blankenship had a son called Lewis Blankenship and he had a daughter named Sarah Blankenship who is my husband's grandmother, Sarah Blankenship Hager. Grandma Hager lived up Lickbranch Hollow with her husband Ed Hager and for a number of years after he died. Her hair was curly and a pretty white color. She always wore scarf on her head around home and house slippers. The only time I ever saw her without the scarf was on an "occasion" that required a little dressing up. That's the way I remember her. Oh, I almost forgot. Shortly after Roy and I were married we went to visit and like most older people she started asking who are your parents and then figured out who the grandparents were concluding with "I think your grandpa Bailey are first cousins." Leaving me thinking that I had just gone and proven that old disparaging remark that West Virginians marry their cousins.
"Most old people did that when they met someone. They try to establish who your family is and "where you come from". Of course people in her generation probably never moved more than within a 50 mile radius from where they were born so it stands to reason that if you toss a rock chances are you'll hit a relative of some kind. But I guess we're all cousins to some degree anyway.
