"Estel graduated from Iaeger High School in 1947. After graduation he began his 46 years of employment with Island Creek Coal Company as a truck driver and hoist operator at the Bartley No. 1 mine in West Virginia, retiring as a coal preparation plant “tipple” operator at Island Creek’s Virginia Pocahontas No. 1 mine in Buchanan County.
"He was an active member of the United Mine Workers of America and served with deep commitment in many capacities, holding several offices. He was Financial Secretary for Local Union 1509 since it was chartered in 1967 and was a District 28 Executive Board Member for many years, beginning in 1975.
"Estel belonged to Berwind Lodge No. 141 A.F. & A.M., in Berwind, West Virginia; to Wyndham Chapter No. 45 R.A.M. (Royal Arch Masons) in Welch, West Virginia; and to Welch Commandery No. 27, Knights Templar. He was a 32nd degree Mason of Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Charleston, West Virginia, and a member of Beni Kedem Temple.
"An active member of the Republican Party, Estel and his wife were honored in 1972 with an invitation to attend Richard M. Nixon’s Presidential Inauguration as well as the Inaugural Ball. Memories of these momentous occasions remained very special to the Paynes.
"Estel enjoyed camping, fishing and boating at Holston Lake during his younger years. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles and, during the past several years, traveling extensively with his wife Corina on their Honda Goldwing trike.
"Estel had an inquisitive mind and lifelong thirst for learning. He loved challenges and put forth his best efforts, no matter what the task. He was a perfectionist and set the bar high. Estel loved the Lord and had a servant’s heart. His family, friends, neighbors and co-workers could always count on him.
"Those left to cherish and smile at many memories are his beloved wife, Corina Kennedy Payne, of Paynesville, West Virginia; his daughter, Cheryl Diane Payne Spoharski and husband, David; his grandchildren, Melanie H. Lashinsky, Nikolai V. Lashinsky and Tyler R. Hart; and great-granddaughter, Shyla M. Lashinsky, all of Lebanon, Virginia.
